My name is Meghan Hickey and this is my 8th year of teaching. This is my third year teaching 5th grade at Centennial. Prior to teaching at Centennial, I taught for 5 years in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, teaching 4th and 5th grades. I received both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, hiking, listening to music, teaching, and traveling.
Literacy:
Guided Reading – students are divided into flexible reading groups based on their reading level. In class, we utilize both fiction and non-fiction texts. I emphasize Bloom’s Taxonomy for higher level thinking and discussions.
Writing Alive – students are very familiar with this wonderful, hands-on program. It emphasizes format, organization, style and fluency, word choice, and conventions in engaging lessons.
Math:
We use the Everyday Math Program here at Centennial. Again, students are grouped flexibly based on their ability. This program not only teaches the children how, but more importantly why. Your child will have either, Mrs. Wolfe, Mr. Capron, or Miss Hickey for math.
Social Studies:
Our curriculum begins with the Early Explorers of the Americas all the way through the Revolutionary War.
Science:
The 5th grade LPS Science curriculum covers the following: human body, magnets, electricity, and the solar system.
Special Activities:
Snow Mountain Ranch (SMR) field trip in May. SMR is part of the YMCA of the Rockies. This trip is a 3 day, 2 night trip in the mountains. Students will complete eight outdoor education classes throughout their 3 day stay. Families make monthly payments from September through March.
