Welcome to MUSIC at Centennial Academy! I am in my tenth year as music specialist at Centennial, and this is a wonderful place to be! I grew up in Kansas City, but I have loved to sing for as long as I can remember. I received my Bachelor of Music degree from North Park University in Chicago, and my Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas. For many years I worked as a professional singer and private voice instructor in the Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth areas, but in 1995 I returned to school at the University of Texas in Arlington to receive my teaching credentials. I love my job because I think Centennial kids and their families are the BEST! And the musical talent of the children in this community is absolutely inspiring! In addition to teaching at Centennial, I am on the staff at Littleton United Methodist Church. I also sing with an exceptional local group called Kantorei, and I maintain a studio of private voice students. Mrs. Theresa Derr

Curriculum Elementary music targets include concepts of beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, musical form, expressive qualities, musical technique, drama, dance, and technology. The use of the text series SHARE THE MUSIC by McGraw-Hill, combined with classroom instruments, musical-of-the-month units, games, and a variety of classroom activities work in harmony to assist Centennial students in the mastery of the targets for their respective grade levels. While the music targets are the basis of instruction, the ultimate goal of music at Centennial is to provide the means for joyful music making! Music is yet another way children can experience success, and is an important academic subject in its own right.
