Dear Families:
While I’ve been here for seven years, every day brings a new challenge to me. Being the dean of students, counselor, and computer coach, allows me to wear different hats in our school. Consequently, I’ve been called: Jimmy Dean, James Dean, Slash, and of course Mr. Y.
As a dean, counselor, and parent I know that the number one concern of parents is the safety of their child. The safety of our school is first and paramount. Before we can educate your child teachers must work in an environment where children feel physically and emotionally safe. Each year we’ve seen a drop in the number of behavior referrals at our school. I believe it is attributable to the partnership that Centennial Academy has with its families and the systems that we have in place.
As for my counseling hat, we continue to develop and implement programming that addresses bullying, tolerance, and teaches our students to be respectful citizens. During the year I teach a character education program called Skillstreaming. Skillstreaming teaches prosocial skills in a variety of areas. Some of the Skillstreaming lessons that have been implemented in the classroom are the following: listening, introducing yourself, giving a compliment, how to respond to teasing, and other character education subjects. In addition to implementing Skillstreaming in the classroom I also work with students in counseling groups that focus on some of the following areas: divorce, grief/loss, anger management, organization skills, friendship, and more.
My "geek" hat is the last hat that I wear. As the computer coach at Centennial Academy much of my "geek" time is spent troubleshooting and keeping our 145+ network computers up and running. With the help of Mrs. Talpers, our school secretary, I also manage our school web site. In other words, if you like our web site, it’s my work. If you don’t, it’s Mrs. Talpers’ work.
Whether you’re considering our school for your child(ren), or a family at our school, I want to say how much I enjoy working with our students, staff, and community. Centennial Academy is truly a special place to be. Please feel free to call me at 303.347.4425, or drop me an email if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jim Yabrove
