Centennial Academy's Early Literacy Intervention program offers individualized, one on one or small group reading instruction to 1st through 3rd grade students. In order to best serve each student, literacy specialists are trained in, and use, a variety of support models, including Early Success, Reading Recovery, and Guided Reading.
All Centennial students receive classroom assessment to determine reading and comprehension levels on a regular basis. Students who demonstrate difficulty are referred to the ELI staff for further assessment and placement in the ELI program. Each child who enters the program receives daily instruction from a specialist, in addition to classroom instruction.
Intervention for 1st grade students typically includes instruction in decoding strategies, phonemic awareness, phonics application, and sight word accumulation; all aimed at helping the student develop his/her own self-extending system.
In 2nd and 3rd grades, a strong emphasis is placed on reading comprehension skills for both fiction and non-fiction texts. In addition, difficulties with decoding skills and reading fluency are addressed as needed.

Welcome to the website for Centennial Academy of the Fine Arts. I am Jeanne Gustafson, a LPS District Literacy Specialist assigned to Centennial for the 2004-2005 school year.
My background includes a BS from Iowa State University in Early Childhood Education and a MA from the University of Colorado at Denver in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in reading and writing. I have additional training and experience in ESL, Early Success, and Reading Recovery. I have held various positions in public and private education, but have been in the literacy programs in LPS since 1987.
I am delighted to be at Centennial. The teachers share my interest in literacy and my desire to meet the needs of individual students. I am impressed by the innovative fine arts program and the opportunities it creates for students.

After teaching for 35 years, I have found a new home at Centennial Elementary. I have a Masters Degree in special education and taught physically challlenged children for 19 years. I have spent the last 28 years in Denver and Aurora teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. My love is literacy, and I have been a literacy coach, mentor, and supervisor of several student teachers.
I have a wonderful husband who is also a semi-retired teacher and a great son who is going to graduate school for an MBA.
In addition to my passion for teaching, I love tennis, skiing, and of course - reading!
I love the people at Centennial and I am so glad to have the opportunity to work here.
